The event, which began Dec. 1, and continues through Wednesday, Dec. 30, allows patrons of the library to reduce their overdue fines while helping feed the hungry.

During the month, the library will forgive $1 in overdue fines for each non-perishable food item brought to the checkout desk.

Up to $20 in fines may be forgiven for each participant.

All food will be donated to the Mahwah Center For Food Action, and will be distributed to those in need throughout northern New Jersey.

Items needed for the food drive include peanut butter and jelly, canned meats, canned fruits, canned vegetables and tomato products, canned soups and beans, pasta and pasta sauce, boxed macaroni and cheese, rice, bottled 100 percent fruit juice, hot and cold cereals, infant formula, baby food, diapers, baby wipes, laundry detergent and dental hygiene products.

Homemade items, items in open packages, perishable items, repackaged and expired items are not allowed.

The food items must be brought to the checkout desk in boxes or plastic bags.

Food for Fines applies to late fees only, and may not be applied toward replacement fees for lost or damaged materials, lost cards or future overdue fines. Patrons must show their library cards, as well.

Overdue materials must be returned in good condition before food donations can be applied as payment for fines.
