A convicted murderer from Trenton is headed to federal prison for four years for selling an illegal semi-automatic rifle and an extended magazine to a buyer who turned out to be a State Police cooperator. Edwin Gaines, 59, must serve all of the plea-bargained term approved Wednesday by a U.S. District Court judge in Trenton because there’s no parole in the federal prison system. Paterson detectives responding to a report of an armed assault chased down a teen who was carrying a loaded handgun and a 170 heroin folds, authorities said. No passengers were aboard a New Jersey Transit bus that slammed into an NJ Turnpike toll plaza as snow began falling heavily Thursday morning, authorities said. It was one of nearly 100 crashes and several dozen assist calls that brought State Police troopers on roadways across New Jersey.
