Mahwah Mayor's Nominee For Police Chief Boasts Experience, Skill, Reputation
His law enforcement credentials and reputation extend beyond Mahwah's borders, and on Friday new Police Chief Stephen Jaffe will take office, pending approval by the township council, after being appointed by Mayor John Roth to replace retiring Chief James N. Batelli. The council scheduled a special meeting this Wednesday to publicly vote on the mayor’s appointment following a closed session with Jaffe. Experience and skill favored the 17-year captain, who has served as the department’s executive officer – and No. 2 in command under Batelli – Roth said. “He brings the most extensive comman…

Mahwah Police Chief Leaves A Modernized, Professional Department Sensitive To Township's Needs
Ask retiring Mahwah Police Chief James N. Batelli for highlights from more than four decades in law enforcement and his attention immediately turns to the accomplishments – large and small -- of the members of the department he’s headed since 2002. “We are a nationally accredited agency through CALEA and that is a tribute to the officers who provide the service,” Batelli said Saturday. “Since the initial accreditation we have received four re-accreditations, which is something our officers work very hard at -- and only 5% of law enforcement agencies in the nation achieve.” Accreditation re…

Aerial Circuits: New Mahwah Police Drones Aim To Boost Protection, Service
If a law enforcement agency is going to add a trio of drones to serve and protect the public, as Mahwah police just did, it might as well get the best. The three new additions are “the most advanced drones available to law enforcement,” Police Chief James N. Batelli said Tuesday. Township police can’t be everywhere, but they can maneuver to unique vantage points with their new mini-squadron. Batelli cited: Search and rescue operations: The drones assist with missing person investigations, Amber Alerts, Silver Alerts and lost hikers, for instance – the last of which will be particularly u…

: Watch Route 17 Road Rage Turn Into Tractor-Trailer Crash
Dashcam video captures a Route 17 road rage incident that ended in a tractor-trailer crash in Mahwah. The footage “underscores the dangers of an increasing trend of road-rage incidents,” Police Chief James N. Batelli said Tuesday. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in the mid-morning crash, he said. It began when the driver of a gray colored SUV “observed what he believed to be a tractor-trailer [driver] driving in an aggressive manner and changing lanes in a reckless manner” on the northbound highway around 9:45 a.m. Aug. 9, the chief said. The SUV driver “decided to take the matt…

Mailbox 'Fishing' Thefts Continue -- This Time In Mahwah
Rampant mailbox thefts in North Jersey continued in Mahwah when deposits were fished from three boxes outside the post office and another on Franklin Turnpike sometime overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, authorities said. Police Chief James N. Batelli urged anyone who deposited anything in these mailboxes that contained personal identifying information -- such as Social Security numbers or credit card or banking information -- sometime Tuesday to file a report with his department. "In addition, you should contact your local bank, credit card companies and credit reporting agencies as soo…

Police Investigate 'Gun' And 'School' Scrawled On Mahwah HS Bathroom Wall
MAHWAH, N.J. – Authorities were reviewing surveillance video to try and find who scribbled the words “gun” and “school” in graffiti found Tuesday morning in a Mahwah High School boy’s bathroom. Although the mostly “indiscernable” markings found in the second-floor bathroom bore both words, “there was no specificity to the graffiti such as a threat, date, time, or location,” Schools Supt. C. Lauren Schoen said. “Mahwah Police were immediately notified and responded and opened an investigation,” Schoen wrote in an email to parents, co-signed by Police Chief James N. Batelli. “A threat assess…

Mahwah Police Urge Residents To Report Rising Middle-Of-Night Robo Calls
MAHWAH, N.J. – Mahwah’s police chief on Thursday urged residents to report what has become a rising number of middle-of-the-night robo-call hangups to federal authorities. “There’s been a dramatic increase of complaints regarding robo calls throughout the state but also within Mahwah,” Police Chief James N. Batelli said. These aren’t the same as those from con men trying to fool people into saving money on electric bills or low mortgages or believing that they needed to pay money to rescue a relative from trouble or avoid arrest by the IRS, he said. The new trend of calls “are getting thro…
