Ridgewood Kitchen Blaze Doused
A garden hose wasn't going to get it done. Ridgewood firefighters quickly doused a blaze that ignited Monday afternoon in the kitchen of a single-family home on Liberty Street, causing considerable fire, smoke and water damage. Although no injuries were reported in the two-alarm Dec. 11 fire, an initial unconfirmed report emerged of a possibly missing dog. Counselors Available Following Death Of Hawthorne Schoolteacher From Glen Rock
The Hawthorne School District will have counselors available on Monday, Aug. 29, following the sudden death of one of its middle school teachers. A funeral service was scheduled later this week for Jeffrey Kolk, of Glen Rock, who taught math at Lincoln Middle School. Kolk, who'd also coached golf at Hawthorne High School, died unexpectedly on Friday, three days after his 46th birthday. An 87-year-old driver from Glen Rock escaped injury when her sedan smashed through the front of a Fair Lawn convenience store. No other injuries were reported, either. The Toyota Avalon barreled into the Quick Mart in a mini-shopping center on Broadway when the driver accidentally hit the gas shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday, Police Sgt. Sean Macys said. A kitchen socket was blown off the wall, a surveillance camera was knocked from the back of the home and a window was blown out when lightning struck a backyard tree in Glen Rock during Wednesday night's storm, authorities said. "The vacationing homeowner is extremely lucky, as is the family dog," Police Chief Dean Ackermann said. Police: Swastika Found At Glen Rock School
A swastika was found drawn on the wall of a bathroom shared by Glen Rock's high school and middle school last week, authorities said Monday. "There are no suspects, nor has a specific intended target been identified," Police Chief Dean Ackermann said. "A bias incident follow-up was completed by the Detective Bureau based upon limited information [made] available from school officials" following last Tuesday's discovery, the chief said.
