Tech Gets 8½ Years Before Parole in Ridgefield Park, Fairview Sex Assaults

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. -- A former cable TV repairman who raped one elderly customer and tried to assault another was sentenced to 8½ years without parole Friday by a judge who told him: “Something is going on with you.”

Jonathan Malave of Montville, 32, was caught after DNA from semen left on the sheets of the 71-year-old rape victim from Fairview matched his.

The second woman, 63, from Ridgefield Park, told the sentencing judge in Hackensack on Friday that she pushed Malave away with her cane and shoved a “victim leadership” certificate at him, distracting him long enough to thrust her front door open.

“And then he just ran out,” she said.

The Fairview victim didn’t come to court but sent a letter that said she's remained under constant stress and in a wheelchair since the August 2014 attack.

Under a plea deal he struck with prosecutors, Malave will be subject to lifetime parole supervision, must register his whereabouts on the state sex offender registry for at least 15 years under Megan's Law and is permanently restrained from contacting either victim. He must also submit a DNA sample to the state.

Superior Court Judge Christopher Kazlau said it made no sense that authorities at the Avenel Diagnostic and Treatment Center for sex offenders rejected Malave.

“There is a common thread -- preying on women who are significantly older, physically vulnerable," the judge said.

“You need help," he told Malave. "If I could send you away longer I would.”
