Survival tips as Sandy dumps on New Jersey

North Bergen native Terry Camilleri lives on the West Coast now, but her heart is with her friends and loved ones back east. So as we prepare to wait out the night and possibly up to 10 days without power, she’s urging us to get survival plans in order — now.

Camilleri (above) suggests that we:

  • Put all irreplaceable items (pictures, legal docs, insurance info, etc) in large plastic sealed bags and store them up high;
  • Fill zip-lock bags w/ice & stuff your freezer, so we can keep food good longer. When the ice melts, we can drink the water;
  • Pick a room where everyone can stay and/or sleep — two words: body heat (Don’t forget the pets either);
  • If you haven’t boarded your windows, consider putting plastic on or around them;
  • Seal around door jams to keep the cold out;
  • Gather blankets, warm clothes, flashlights, batteries, candles, matches, toys and games together; it will help reduce everyone’s anxiety;
  • Have pots ready in case of ceiling leaks;
  • Have large containers w/lids ready, too (Some toilets won’t flush);
  • Fill tubs and all sinks w/water;
  • If you still have power, be sure ALL cellphones & computers in the house are fully charged — then keep them off as much as possible to save power;
  • Share/use only one phone & computer at a time;
  • Put your car in the garage, then back it up to touch the door, which will help keep it from blowing in;
  • If you have to evacuate, leave information on walls as to where you are going so that relatives/emergency workers can find you if there’s no phone service;
  • “Remember your elderly neighbors,” Camilleri added. “Have them stay with you if possible.

“We are tough and we will get through this. God bless!”
