It was just after 10 o’clock when Bergen County Security Officer Keith McGovern began telling patrons in the Ridgefield Park section that Overpeck was closing for the night.

That’s when he noticed a man holding onto a woman at the comfort station near the amphitheater.

“As he drew closer, he could hear the male asking for help,” Bergen County Police Lt. Robert Espinosa said.

McGovern saw that the woman’s boyfriend “was actually holding the female’s hand containing the knife, while restraining her with his other hand,” Espinosa said.

The officer quickly grabbed the knife, as the woman began to walk along the bike path, the lieutenant said.

The man told him his girlfriend was suicidal and has a history of mental illness. So McGovern followed her while radioing for assistance.

County officers, along with their counterparts from Leonia and Ridgefield Park, arrived moments later.

Ridgefield Park Ambulance took the woman to Bergen Regional Medical Center, where she was admitted after an evaluation, Espinosa said.
