Ridgefield Park girl, 13, says van driver gestured to her

PUBLIC ALERT: Ridgefield Park police are seeking the public’s help finding a driver who a 13-year-old girl told them motioned to her from a dark-colored van last night so that they can determine exactly what happened.

The girl said she was walking north on Main Street around 6 pm. when the driver gestured to her at the intersection of Hazleton Street and Central Avenue.

“It appeared the man was gesturing/motioning for her to come over to the van,” Capt. Daniel Hippe said this afternoon.

The girl left and called her mother, he said.

“It is unclear whether the driver made or attempted to make any verbal communication with the juvenile,” Hippe said. “The actual gesture made by the driver and his intentions are still the subject of investigation.”

The van was in heavy traffic at the intersection, with vehicles in front and beyond it, and police are hopeful that someone saw it.

The driver was described as Hispanic, about 40 years old, with light brown skin and a goatee. He was wearing a black jacket and black winter cap, the girl told police.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to call Ridgefield Park PD: (201) 641-6400
