Security guards alerted Officer Christopher Inserra around 1 p.m. to a trio of suspicious men who were caught on surveillance video “roaming the aisles and placing items in the bags, then disappearing into the bathroom with the bags” before continuing, Sgt. Jeff Napolitano told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Inserra grabbed the trio as they headed to the exit, then brought them to the security office, Napolitano said.
One of them was allowed to leave after questioning, but as one of the others began to unzip a bag to remove shoplifted items, Inserra spotted the .177-caliber revolver.
He and arriving Detective Anthony Fugnitti took both men into custody.
“The gun is considered a firearm by NJ law,” Napolitano noted. “Had it been brandished, it could have caused a tragedy….[I]t had all the appearences of a large-caliber firearm.”
Tevin Jordan, 21, and Charles Johnson, 19, admitted they were headed to New York from Pennsylvania when they stopped at the new superstore to steal clothing and other items, the sergeant said.
Johnson was released on a court summons.
Jordan was ordered held on $10,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail.
