"I never expected someone to to run across the median," the driver, who was on his way to work, told police.
The pedestrian was in the surgical intensive care unitat Hackensack University Medical Center with a spinal injury and broken hip after the 5:50 a.m. crash on the eastbound highway near Industrial Avenue, Detective Sgt. Anthony Fugnitti told Daily Voice.
Detectives were investigating, Fugnitti said, adding that the pedestrian wasn't in a crosswalk.
"It looks like an unfortunate accident," he said.
