Officer Gabe Castellanos was working a traffic enforcement detail around 2:20 a.m. when he spotted a black Acura driving erratically on Route 46 in Little Ferry, BCPD Lt. John Mullin said.
“The driver eventually slowed to a stop in the right lane when he saw the marked police car as to not let the police officer get behind him,” Mullin said.
Castellanos pulled him over and “detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage and noted his eyes bloodshot and watery,” the lieutenant said.
The driver — identified as Yahsamen R. Bush, 33, of East Orange — failed a series of sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for DWI.
That’s when Castellanos discovered the daggers, which are prohibited by New Jersey law, Mullin said.
A breath sample from Bush at BCPD headquarters produced a blood alcohol content level of .08% — above the legal limit, the lieutenant said.
Bush was charged with weapons possession, DWI, careless driving, delaying traffic and failing to wear a seatbelt.
He was released without bail pending a court hearing.
Besides Bush’s arrest, BCPD officers issued 40 summons during the special traffic detail.
