Police snatched up the group in the TD Bank parking lot at the corner of 36th Street and Kennedy Blvd. on Friday night — and, along with them, thousands of fliers that hadn’t yet been distributed, said Chief Charles Everett.
Frank Scarafile Jr., 50, who ran unsuccessfully for a commissioner’s seat three years ago and was once principal of Emerson High School, apparently was behind the fraud, police said. Scarafile, who’s been Little Ferry’s schools chief the past seven years, has often clashed with Stack.
Written in English on one side and Spanish on the other, the flier clearly — which included his photo, as well as office and cellphone numbers — was designed to hurt the popular mayor’s reputation, the chief said.
Also arrested and charged were: Joamelly Arteaga, 20, of 41st Street; Justo Delgado, 66, of 44th Street; Armando J. Hernandez, 47, of the 4300 block of Kennedy Boulevard; and Carlos Lopez, 45, of the 4700 block of New York Avenue, all of Union City; and Emilio Lopez, 48, of the 5600 block of Boulevard East in West New York.
“I commend the Union City Police Department for their efforts regarding this matter,” Stack said in a statement. “I trust the legal system will appropriately address these circumstances.”
