But Wood-Ridge police got there immediately, thanks to a 911 call, and took the suspect into custody.

The victim came out of the convenience store just before 9 o’clock Thursday night to find Eric Urias of Kearney (above) on the hood of his car, Detective Joseph Rutigliano told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The elderly man told police he confronted Urias, who pushed him aside, got into the car and began pulling things from the glove compartment.

The victim said he tried to stop the robber but was punched in the face and thrown to the ground.

Police said the resulting injuries weren’t serious.

Urias,  meanwhile, was being held on $47,500 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with assault, attempted robbery and theft and criminal mischief, among other offenses.
