Carlos Eddie Bonilla, 35, was "extremely intoxicated" when Officers James Rose and Dominick Verdi tried questioning him on Helen Street after a caller told police early Saturday evening that he'd been urinating in someone's bushes, Police Chief Ralph Verdi said.

Bonilla "began cursing at the officers and refusing to speak to them," while "swaying and stumbling," the chief said.

They'd called an ambulance when Bonilla "became more irate and began charging [Rose] in a threatening manner with clenched fists," Verdi said.

Both officers got him to the ground and into handcuffs, but he managed to hit Rose in the face as they put him into the ambulance, the chief said.

Bonilla was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center in police custody, where he remained until he sobered up, Verdi said.

He was then taken to the Bergen County Jail, where he remained held on $50,000 bail, charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest with injury.
