BCSO Officer Matthew DeBonis said he was stopped on the highway’s westbound side around 3 a.m. by Thomas Burgos.

Burgos, 46, asked the officer if he “could assist him in removing his wife from his vehicle,” the Sheriff’s Office’s Dave Martinez told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon.

They’d been arguing “all day” and she refused to get out of his car, DeBonis said Burgos told him.

The officer said found the woman bleeding from her mouth and chin. He said she told him that she hit her face on the metal steps of Burgos’s tractor-trailer when he pushed her out.

DeBonis arrested Burgos on assault charges and found him carrying two pill bottles of nearly 200 various medications — for diabetes, muscle relaxing and thyroid, Martinez said.

Burgos remained held on $5,000 bail in the Bergen County jail, charged with simple assault and illegal possession of prescription drugs. A court appearance at the jail was set for tomorrow morning.
