Robert J. Burns, 89, Hasbrouck Heights Resident

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J. – Robert J. Burns, of Hasbrouck Heights and formerly of Jersey City, died Monday, March 14. He was 89.

He was born in March 17, 1926, in Jersey City, to the late Helen and John Henry Burns. He was a graduate of Seton Hall University, where he received his bachelor’s degree. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served from 1945-47 in the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment 82nd Airborne Division. He was a member of the James B. Scarr American Legion Post 106 in Hasbrouck Heights. 

Before he retired, he was a regional sales manager for Industrial Waste Technologies in Oakland. He was a parishioner of Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church and a member of the Monsignor Fitzpatrick Knights of Columbus Council 7041, both in Hasbrouck Heights. He was the first Democratic councilman elected in Hasbrouck Heights and served in the New Jersey State Assembly from 1976-79. He was a member of the Jeffersonian Democratic Club in Hasbrouck Heights and was a former chairman of the Bergen County Tax Board.

He was the husband of Eleanor (Solinski) Burns; father of Noreen Burns, Neil Burns and his wife, Jeannine, and the late Diane and Robert Burns; brother of Blanche McGurr; and grandfather of Veronica and Stanley.

Visitation will take place from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Costa Memorial Home, 170 Central Ave., Hasbrouck Heights. The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Costa Memorial Home. A funeral liturgy will take place at 10 a.m. from Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
