Wood-Ridge Radio Station Plays Oldies, But Goodies

WOOD-RIDGE, N.J. -- From a studio in his home, a Wood-Ridge webmaster plays oldies, country, 70s-90s pop, and Christian music every Sunday helped by a buddy and an engineer, and looking for some underwriters. The station is WSBP-LP, at 94.3 on the FM dial.

Rich Domanski runs an FM low-power community radio station serving Wood-Ridge and surrounding communities.

Rich Domanski “does it for the love of radio,” and wants to offer an experience like the radio of pre-1950.

Domanski created the station himself, and he says Superstorm Sandy is what made him do it.

“When those communications went out, I realized there was a real need for local radio,” said Domanski, who was without heat and power for 11 days.

He first applied to the FCC for a license, then filed for nonprofit status, and purchased equipment over a period of time.

Two years later, WSBP-LP went live.

The station is part of the emergency alert system, and plays public service announcements like road closures and school closings morning and again afternoon to early evening.

Jerry Kulesa, also a resident of Wood-Ridge, has a 50’s and 60’s rock and roll show Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Feedback from listeners has been very positive, and the signal can be heard as far as Cliffside Park to Teaneck, the Garden State Plaza, Lyndhurst and Clifton.

“I’m happy I got this going, I really am,” Rich said. “I just enjoy getting on the air every once in a while, throwing in one liners -- it’s relaxing. I enjoy it.
