HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J. -- Hasbrouck Heights Boy Scout Troop 17 celebrated its latest Eagle Scout with a Court of Honor at the Hasbrouck Heights VFW.

The event honored Hasbrouck Heights resident John Shamus Mullins' achievement of the Eagle Scout rank. To achieve the ultimate rank, he needed to earn at least 21 Merit Badges, 11 which are mandatory, and provide leadership to a community service project.

For his service project, the St. Mary High School senior organized and led a community project to clean up and repaint the parking lots at the Hasbrouck Heights municipal building. He held a bake sale, which raised almost $1,100 for the needed supplies and equipment. His project included the efforts of 20 fellow Scouts and several adults putting in 200-plus man-hours to finish the project in August. The surplus of raised funds, almost $700, was donated to the Hasbrouck Heights Food Pantry, and leftover paint and supplies were donated to the Department of Public Works for future projects.

Several community leaders made presentations in recognition of Mullin's achievement of Eagle Scout, including those from American Legion Post 106, Bergen County Central Labor Council AFL-CIO, the Sons of Union Veterans of Civil War, Hasbrouck Heights Police Department, Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department, Hasbrouck Heights Public Library, Marine Corps League, the Hasbrouck Heights mayor and council, New Jersey Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, Corpus Christi/Assumption Church Youth Group and Hasbrouck Heights VFW.

Scoutmaster Bill Severino recalled all the camping trips and hikes and special events that Mullins has experienced in his Scout career and fondly noted that he is “the fabric of the troop.”

Mullins will graduate from St. Mary High School, Rutherford, in the spring and looks to major in business in college.
