Through proper colorectal screening, doctors can find and remove hidden growths in the colon, before they become cancerous. The vast majority of cases of colorectal cancer occur in people age 50 and older. In its early stages, colorectal cancer often does not show any symptoms, making crucial for individuals who are over 50 to be screened regularly.

In recognition of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, which takes place in March, the Valley Hospital and National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable will be hosting its second annual Colon Cancer Awareness Day Fair and distributing colon cancer screening kits at two locations.

In response to the need to raise awareness about the importance of colorectal cancer screenings, The Valley Hospital is proud to be joining more than 150 local and national organizations to increase screening rates throughout the country as a part of the NCCRT, The American Cancer Society, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s “80% by 2018” initiative. The goal of “80% by 2018” is to have 80 percent of adults aged 50 and older being screened for colorectal cancer by 2018.

Free screening kits can be picked up at the Luckow Pavilion North Registration Desk, located at One Valley Health Plaza, Paramus, N.J. during the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., from Monday, March 21 through Wednesday, March 23. Limit 2 kits per person.

On Wednesday, March 23, from 9 to 11 a.m., Valley will host a Colon Cancer Awareness Day Fair in the Terrace Room at the hospital, located at 223 North Van Dien Ave. in Ridgewood.

The fair will include representatives from the Endoscopy Department, Employee Health, Valley Dining, Genetic Counseling, Respiratory Care and Oncology, who will provide information about the prevention and detection of colon cancer. There will be an “Ask the Doctor” table with a physician available to answer questions. Colon cancer screening kits will be available, as well as educational materials about colonoscopies and screening methods.
