The first visible total solar eclipse in over 25 years takes place Monday. Aug. 21 starting at 1:44 p.m. It peaks around 2:45 and ends at 4 p.m.
The moon will cover about 75 percent of the sun in our area, but you'll still get to experience this rare celestial event. Just head to the following nearby locales -- and keep your fingers crossed for clear skies. Remember, too, to pack your eclipse glasses.
- Garret Mountain Reservation, Woodland Park: The 75-foot Lambert Observation Tower offers a large amount of open space for optimal viewing. Best to face NYC.
- Overpeck County Park, Ridgefield Park: Head to the area by Overpeck Creek or go to the boat launch by the Equestrian Center for prime spots.
- Ramapo Mountain State Forest, Oakland and Ringwood: You'll need to hike a bit but the Lakeshore Path around Ramapo Lake offers a gap in the trees, making for an ideal viewing spot. The Wanaque Ridge trail also offers good western views.
- Richard W. DeKorte Park, Lyndhurst: DeKorte Park in the Meadowlands features miles of walking paths and panoramic views of the wetlands, perfect for looking up. Also recommended: The March Discovery Trail or the Kingsland Overlook.
