Belmar Police ID Drowning Victim From Labor Day Rip Currents Belmar police have identified a swimmer who drowned Sunday evening, Sept. 3. Gilberto Mendez Jr., 42, of Roselle Park, was swimming off Fifth Avenue just after 6 p.m. when he began struggling in rip currents, Belmar Borough police said. Stabbing Reported In Central Jersey: Developing Police and EMS crews were called to a stabbing in Central Jersey, according to developing and unconfirmed reports. The stabbing occurred at about 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8  in the 300 block of Parsonage Road in Edison, initial reports said.  Police were on the scene of a stabbing that injured a person in a section of the Township Tuesday night. The victim was suffering multiple stab wounds to the chest and was taken to an area hospital, an unconfirmed report said. Edison police were not immediately available for comment. Male Critically Wounded In Central Jersey Morning Shooting One person was left critical following a shooting in Central Jersey Sunday, authorities said. The male was found with a gunshot wound around 10:20 a.m. near Remsen Avenue and Seaman Street in New Brunswick, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone said. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he remains in critical condition. Firefighters who responded within three minutes were met by flames on the first floor of the 2½-story Lunn Avenue home shortly after 1 p.m., Bergenfield Fire Chief Edward J Kneisler III said. A woman reportedly was stabbed at mid-afternoon on Tuesday in front of a Stop & Shop store on Route 36 in Keyport, according to initial reports. ATV Rider Seriously Hurt In Monmouth County Crash An unidentified ATV rider was seriously hurt on Tuesday evening, authorities said.  Howell police and township emergency services responded about 7 p.m. on Tuesday to a crash in which a person crashed while riding a quad, police said. The crash occurred off of Tyrpak Road northbound near West Farms Road. 100 Central Jersey Firefighters Braved Blaze During Blizzard, 3 Hurt More than 100 firefighters battled a major house fire as this week's blizzard ramped up in Central Jersey, authorities said. The fire started in a wood-framed, mixed-use building on Broad Street in Manasquan shortly before 4 p.m. on Monday.  The building’s owner told News 12 that three people lived on the upper floors of the building and that they were able to escape. Two residents and a local firefighter were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries, fire officials said. A malfunctioning ventilator fan was suspected to be the origin of the fire, according to initial reports.
