Police Free Motorist In Utility Pole Crash That Closed Route 17 Upper Saddle River police officers broke the rear window to free a driver whose SUV landed on its side after hitting a utility pole on Route 17 during the heavy overnight rainstorm, authorities said. The 49-year-old Paterson motorist was headed south when he lost control of his Ford Explorer, which went off the roadway and hit the pole outside Jack Daniels Audi shortly after 1 a.m., Police Capt. Passaic County Declares Code Blue Passaic County has declared Code Blue ahead of Wednesday's storm. It will go into effect at 6 p.m. March 6. In accordance with Passaic County’s Code Blue Action Plan, the impending weather will generate freezing temperatures or weather conditions that pose a danger to individuals without shelter, and Code Blue will be in effect starting at 6pm on March 6th, 2018. Warming shelters are now open, and police authorities are permitted to transport any at-risk individuals to a warming shelter.  If you or someone you know needs shelter for the night, call NJ 2-1-1 (877-652-1148).

The truck tipped over just before 11 a.m., closing the northbound highway and backing traffic near the Mahwah border for a few hours. Weather conditions made clearing the wreckage difficult.
