PASSAIC COUNTY, N.J. -- A rare celestial event will take place on Sunday when a lunar eclipse coincides with the super moon, according to

The supermoon occurs when the Earth's satellite reaches the point in its orbit when it is closest to the planet. The moon appears 14 percent larger during this time. The supermoon will be coupled with a lunar eclipse, when the moon passes behind the Earth's shadow. Red light is able to pass through the Earth's atmosphere creating what is often referred to as a blood moon, said.

The supermoon and blood moon will coincide at approximately 9:07 p.m. on Sunday, though conditions may not be ideal in the northeast with cloudy skies expected.

The two events won't happen together again for another 18 years.
