Woman Deliberately Set Rutherford Garden Apartment Fire, Authorities Charge
A woman remained held Tuesday after authorities charged her with deliberately igniting a fire in the kitchen of a garden apartment in the Rutherford complex where she lives. Mary Anne Hampl, 62, was arrested shortly after 7 p.m. last Thursday, Feb. 8, after borough firefighters doused the Hastings Avenue blaze, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said. Hampl, who Musella said is unemployed, is accused of intentionally creating a fire and smoke condition with items purposefully placed on a stove. The prosecutor didn't suggest a possible motive. Man Killed By Freight Train In Northvale
A man was struck and killed by a freight train in northeast Bergen County near the New York State line. The man -- who responders said appeared to be in his 20s -- was struck near the Clinton Avenue crossing off Briarwood Lane near Veterans Memorial Park shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3. A former Bergen County resident was seized by U.S. Marshals and extradited to New Jersey this week to face charges of repeatedly sexually assaulting an underage teenager several years ago. Alex L. Northvale detectives charged a New York man with firing the shots during a wedding reception that brought an army of police to The Rockleigh catering hall last month. Ersin Kolenovic, 23, was released after being charged on Friday, Oct. 7, in connection with the Sept. 25 incident, Northvale Police Chief Howard Ostrow said. A wedding was underway when a boiler fire broke out at a popular Bergen County event venue early Thursday night, authorities said. A Northvale home was deemed uninhabitable after an SUV plowed into it, authorities said. The Ford Flex barreled up the West Avenue driveway, through bushes and into the house at 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, Northvale Police Chief Howard J. Ostrow said.
