This grant, coupled with the STEM labs that will be added through the recent passage of the referendum, will bring the college and career readiness of Northern Valley students to new heights. The grant program, called "Building Capacity for Career Pathways," will be used to enhance a new health and biomedical program, slated to be introduced in the 2017-18 school year.

The district had already begun to shape such a new program for its students, since approximately 13 percent plan to pursue further studies and careers in these areas. All students will have access to the new program, which is a collaboration between the science, mathematics and technology/engineering departments.

Other components of the new program will include structured learning experiences for 12th graders, mentorship for all participating students and co-curricular activities. The largest portion of the funding will be used for supplies for cross-curricular student projects.

Funds will also be used for staff to travel to build required partnerships with institutions of higher education and key industry partners, such as Hackensack University Medical Center. Staff will also visit other model high school programs to prepare for implementation.

In addition, funds will be used to provide professional development for teachers and guidance counselors, teaching materials, curriculum development, and promotional programs and materials for students and families from the K-8 districts that send their students to Northern Valley.

The main goal of the program will be for students to become more college- and career-ready to enter STEM fields. The purpose of this grant program is to assist comprehensive high schools in developing career and technical education programs to be approved by the NJDOE.

A total of eight awards were made to districts around New Jersey. Northern Valley, as one of the eight recipients, will receive up to $100,000 a year over the next five years to support program development and implementation in different career pathways.
