Louis Bay II was the mayor of Hawthorne for 40 years and spent over 60 years in a variety of municipal leadership roles, including with the League of Municipalities. The League honors his lifelong commitment to excellence in municipal government by awarding up to three $1,000 scholarships a year, as part of its Building Future Municipal Leaders program.
"Each member of Haworth's governing body has had the opportunity to work with Brian over the years, whether in his sports, scouting and church activities," said Haworth Mayor John Smart, noting that Holden is also an Eagle Scout and a 2016 javelin champion for his track team.
"Brian is truly a future municipal leader, and we are happy to be able to have a part in recognizing his commitment in this way."
This annual scholarship is coordinated by the League of Municipalities through mayors statewide. The mayors distribute applications and appoint a committee to judge submitted essays.
Haworth's judges were Library Director David Marks, Councilwoman Regina Duffy and Haworth School Superintendent Jenn Montesano. They selected Holden's application as the winner in Haworth and submitted it to League headquarters for review by a state panel, which then selected it as the winner.
Holden received the check and a certificate at Haworth's council meeting on Tuesday evening.
