Before taking a gun and other items during a pair of kick-in burglaries in Cresskill, the duo tried to bust into a Prospect Avenue residence in Haworth, police said.
“Fortunately for the homeowner, the deadbolt held well,” Haworth Lt. Thomas Ryan told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this afternoon.
Several neighbors reported seeing two white males in their late teens or early 20s running south on Pleasant Street after the attempt, Ryan said.
They were described as tall and thin, wearing ski masks and dark clothing — and carrying snow shovels, he said.
Sometime around 3:30 p.m., a Park Ridge resident who lives near the Garden State Parkway reported a similar kick-in burglary. The thieves ransacked an upstairs bedroom, stuffing jewelry and other valuables into pillow cases, police said.
Residents there reported seeing a white Chevy van similar to one spotted in the Cresskill neighborhoods where the burglars struck yesterday morning.
The thieves, one of whom was wearing a ski mark, left a shovel behind in Cresskill.
Residents of both houses where home and scared off the burglars — but not before the .357 was snatched, police said.
Jewelry also was taken, they said, but that was left behind in a pillowcase when the burglars bolted.
The ski-masked thief was described as white, 5-foot 9, and the other about 6 feet tall.
