Gracey replaces Chief Chris Campbell, who held the post for nearly six years. Campbell, a 28-year department veteran, officially retired Wednesday.

Gracey, who was selected from among four candidates, began as a dispatcher with the borough in 1990. He became a police officer four years later.

Perhaps most importantly, Mayor John Smart noted, Gracey ran the field training program for all new officers and, as a result, is "well-suited to train and develop" the department.

Gracey also headed the traffic bureau and took on administrative duties shortly after Campbell became chief. He also is a borough volunteer firefighter.

"The officers of the department greatly appreciate the dedication and service of Chief Campbell and look forward to the continued success of the Haworth Police Department led by newly appointed Chief Michael Gracey," Sgt. Justin Fox told Daily Voice.

"We are confident under his leadership that Chief Gracey will serve with the highest standards of integrity, character, and accountability -- not only for the force but for the residents of the borough," Fox said.
