An officer first spotted Sean G. Johnson, 22, walking on private property near Paulding Avenue toward the CSX Rail Line around 11:15 a.m., Police Chief William Essmann said.

The officer then spotted him “crouched down along the fence line of a residence on Briarwood Avenue,” Essmann said.

Johnson ran, was chased down by the officer and fought him off, the chief said.

Officers from Closter, Norwood and Old Tappan quickly converged on the area, and a Northvale officer grabbed Johnson on Birchwood Road.

Essmann said a backpack with 80 grams of marijuana inside was found in the area where Johnson fought with the officer.

Johnson was being held on $75,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with attempting to disarm a police officer, aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and a trio of drug counts.
