The New Jersey State Police Central Security Unit has intercepted two of the letters and was in the process of obtaining seven others that were believed sent, according to a memo issued by NJSP Detective G. Tibbs.
“An interview of the inmate, identified as Albert Faust by the Department of Corrections, has determined he has sent nine (9) of these letters out to different District Offices,” Tibbs wrote.
Faust, 45, who is serving an 18-year term on major drug convictions at East Jersey State Prison in Woodbridge, “will not identify who[m] he mailed these letters to,” the memo says.
“Please note that no direct threat has been identified in any intercepted letter as of this time,” it adds.
“We’re not sure whether it’s a hoax or not,” a legislative aide told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “But it seems legit in terms of where it came from.”
The Central Security Unit, which protects state officials, is investigating.
Faust, who was sentenced in 2002, was required to serve a mandatory minimum of nine years for a conviction of manufacturing and distributing drugs out of Monmouth County.
