"I am proud to say that these officers come highly regarded by their previous employers," Police Chief Albert Maalouf told Daily Voice.

Officer James LaVigna, employed by the Rochelle Park Police Department the past two years, and Officer Michael Getto, who worked for the Norwood Police Department the past four years were sworn in Thursday by Mayor Paul Hoelscher.

Both officers, among their many accomplishments, have reputations for keeping citizens safe from drunk drivers.

LaVigna made headlines when he maneuvered his police cruiser to block a DWI motorist from reaching Rochelle Park's 2015 Memorial Day parade. He wasn't injured when the woman's car struck the cruiser, authorities said.

Getto, meanwhile, has been among the state's leaders in taking drunk drivers off New Jersey's roads.

They replace two officers who left the force, Hoelscher noted.
