New Bergen ‘courtroom in the jail’ opens

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: The doors to the new courtroom at the Bergen County Jail Annex open at 10 a.m. sharp tomorrow, when Superior Court Judge Louis J. Dinice will begin conducting first appearance hearings for recent arrestees. The county’s first-ever “courtroom in the jail” was designed to save money — possibly as much as $500,000 a year, Bergen County Sheriff Leo McGuire said.

Besides helping to reduce court backlogs, it will make processing much safer, he said: There won’t be any more need to transport those charged from the jail to the annex to a courtroom.

Dinice will see his first set of defendants between 10 and 11 a.m., depending on how soon morning court proceedings end.
