“When we got the news, Matt was happy, shocked and nervous all rolled into one. He jumped around in excitement until he realized I was crying — thankfully tears of joy,” his mom, Jeanine Alvino Doyle, told CLIFFVIEW PILOT, before the results were made official tonight.
“I went into this contest hoping to make a difference in Matt’s life. However, through sharing his story, Matt helped me realize there are still good-hearted people out there,” Doyle added. “I thought Matt was just MY hero, but over 1,000 people we’ve never met, from 12 countries around the world read his story and felt the same way.”
“During both surgeries and all of the subsequent recoveries, I was powerless to help my son,” Doyle told CLIFFVIEW PILOT a few weeks ago (see story, below). Now, she says, she’s able to give him something special, which might help “make up for all he’s gone through.”
Couldn’t have happened to a sweeter boy — or to a more determined mom and her supportive friends. Talk about the power of social networking: A Facebook page went with a tireless effort by friends and others to spread the word about the Atlantis Resorts contest. And it worked.
Matt’s first operation was when he was three; the second was last year.
Despite these, as well as “hospital stays, countless MRI’s, doctor visits, self-injected daily hormone shots and test after test, he is the most positive and carefree person I know,” Doyle told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “When I need strength to face life’s challenges, I turn to my hero’s smiling face for inspiration.”
We could say the same, Jeanine. Way to go — not just you but to all of those dedicated personal friends who made it their mission to help you, as well as the strangers who cared enough to vote.
Most of all: Congratulations, Matt! You are OUR hero, too.
(Don’t forget the sunscreen, kiddo.)
