The 53-year-old firefighter needed CPR at the scene of the Railroad Avenue house fire (left) before being rushed to Englewood Medical Center, Norwood Police Chief Jeffrey Krapels told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
As of 3 this afternoon, he seemed to be doing OK, the chief said.
“I hope he’s going to be all right,” said Krapels, who brought the firefighter’s wife. “He’s a really good guy.”
The cause of the fire isn’t official yet, but Krapels said it appears a wet/dry vac that was cleaning up floodwater shorted out in the basement, igniting the blaze.
Among several departments that immediately responded with Norwood were those from Closter, Northvale, and Harrington Park, the chief said.
Rescue workers got four dogs and two cats out of the building. No one else was inside, Krapels said, and no other injuries were reported.
Krapels, under federal law, couldn’t disclose the firefighter’s identity. CLIFFVIEW PILOT is withholding the name out of respect for the family.
