The 44-year-old Paterson driver's car got stuck on the tracks on Lafayette Road just after 11:30 p.m., Police
Chief Albert Maalouf told Daily Voice.
"He realized a [CSX River Line] train was approaching and vacated his vehicle prior to the collision," the chief said.
Responding officers found the driver walking away from area, Maalouf said, adding that he then didn't cooperate with them.
They arrested him after he failed field sobriety tests and brought him to headquarters, hwere he refused to take a breath test, the chief said.
Police charged him with DUI, failing to submit to the test, reckless driving and failing to yield.
He was released to the custody of a family member under John's Law.
A wrecker was called to remove the mangled vehicle.
