Feds: Norwood convict cheated IRS out of $200,000 with fake employers

Here’s a tax scam you don’t hear often: Federal authorities have charged Stephen Pirrone of Norwood with filing bogus W-2 forms claiming he worked for companies that didn’t exist — pocketing $200,000 in tax refunds in the process. Only thing is: He’s already behind bars.

A federal grand jury in Newark indicted Pirrone, 50, last month on charges of filing “false, fictitious and fraudulent claims” for six straight years, beginning with 2003.

The government may have him dead to rights, considering its claim that Pirrone created the false W-2s for a relative, as well. That relative hasn’t been charged, which in grand jury circles means one thing: unindicted co-conspirator.

Pirrone was sentenced to three years in prison in December for a burglary conviction. He’s serving his sentence at South Woods State Prison in Bridgeton.
