Contractor Killed By Own Van In Old Tappan

OLD TAPPAN, N.J. – A contractor was killed by his own van early Friday when it rolled down a steep driveway in Old Tappan.

Mark Tobey, 49, of Monroe, N.Y., was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center in by the Old Tappan First Aid Corp after rainy weather conditions prevented the use of a medical chopper, Police Chief Thomas M. Shine.

Tobey was last seen retrieving items from a shed when he was struck at the base of the Orangeburg Road driveway, just off Old Tappan Road, by his 2008 GMC Savannah around 7:40 a.m., Shine said.

The driveway “is on a steep incline and the van was stopped about halfway up,” the chief said.

Old Tappan police later received a report that Tobey was pronounced dead at the hospital at 9:20 a.m., he said.

An investigation was continuing, the chief said.
