Crowley, 45, was born at what was then Englewood Hospital during what his obituary said was a "fierce spring blizzard" on March 30, 1970, his mother's birthday.

He was graduated from Bergen Catholic High School in 1988 after serving as junior class president, and, in 1992, from Stetson University in Deland, Florida.

"Joe’s wit and humor, combined with remarkable compassion for others, were the trademarks of his soul and spirit," an obituary posted Thursday by the Pizzi Funeral Home in Northvale said.

Crowley came from a family with a long history of police and military service.

He was only four when his father, Englewood Police Sgt. John F. Crowley, died from carbon monoxide asphyxiation while sitting in an idling patrol car in 1975.

His mother, Barbara, raised him with her second husband and his stepfather, Louis Baptiste, as well as his now-deceased grandparents, Frank and Jeanette Valentino.

Crowley is survived by daughters Hannah Barbara, 4, and Emily Lea, 1, as well as his mother, brothers John F. Crowley of Princeton and Jason Louis Baptiste of New York City and sisters-in law Aileen Crowley and Lauren Baptiste, in addition to two nephews and a niece.

He is also survived by an uncle, retired Englewood Deputy Police Chief James J. Crowley, of Washington Township and two aunts, Michele Valentino of East Haven, CT, and Catherine Crowley Beneventano of Medford Lakes, NJ.

His cousin, Jim Crowley, is a Baltimore police sergeant.

Visitating hours are from 4-8 p.m. at the Pizzi Funeral Home at 120 Paris Avenue. The Funeral Mass was set for 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church at 102 Park Street in Haworth, with interment to follow next to his father’s gravesite in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Tenafly.
