Alfred Peter Butti, 86, Of Norwood

NORWOOD, N.J. -- Alfred Peter Butti, 86, of Norwood, died Oct. 18. 

He was born Feb. 25, 1930, in Fairview, grew up in Cresskill and graduated from Tenafly High School. 

Butti served as a U.S. Marine (1951-53) in the Korean War and saw action in the Battle of Pork Chop Hill. He was a Marine at heart until the day he passed and led every aspect of his life by the U.S. Marine Corps motto: Semper Fi. (“always faithful” or “always loyal”). 

He was an active member of the American Legion Leroy S. Mead Post 111, Closter. He took great pride in participating in parades honoring his country and veterans. He especially loved speaking at annual Veterans Day ceremonies at local schools. He was the first Grand Knight and a founding member of the Knights of Columbus (1985), Council 9021 – Immaculate Conception Church. 

A resident of Norwood for more than 60 years, he contributed to the community in many ways. He was the town’s building inspector for more than 30 years and a member of the Ambulance Corp. for many years, including a stint as captain. He also served on the planning board and recreation board. He coached Norwood baseball for more than three decades. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; parents, Pietro Butti and Rosa Balzaretti Butti; stepmother, Lena Tagliabue Butti; sister, Angela Rancan; and brother, Alvin Butti. 

He is survived by his son, Thomas and his wife Carol; daughter, Laura Mason and her husband Bruc; son, Richard and his wife Deirdre; son, Michael and his wife Joanna; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. 

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church, 211 Summit St., Norwood with interment to follow at Rockland Cemetery in Sparkill. Visiting hours will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave., Northvale. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his name be made to American Legion Leroy S. Mead Post 111, Closter, NJ 07624.
