Booker is currently the junior United States Senator from New Jersey. When he took office in 2013, he became the state's first black senator. Prior to that, he was the mayor of Newark, from 2006 to 2013, and he served on the city council before that.
Then-Mayor Booker "went viral" nationwide in 2013, when he went into a burning building in his neighborhood and was able to get a neighbor to safety, as reported by the New York Times.
As senator, Booker is working on bipartisanship to accomplish policy goals, like working with Republican Sen. Rand Paul to overhaul the criminal justice system.
