A funeral Mass was held Tuesday, March 19, for an 18-year-old Montclair State University freshman from Jersey City whose body was recovered from Newark Bay. Hayley Alvarado had been missing since just before Christmas last year. Her body was spotted and then recovered from the bay near Gregg County Park in Bayonne on March 5, according to the Hudson County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities Try To ID Body Of Woman Pulled From Waters Off Bayonne
An autopsy will help determine whether the death of a woman whose body was pulled from Newark Bay was suspicious. The body was recovered near Stephen R. Gregg Park in Bayonne around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, said Caitlin Mota of the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office. Authorities hadn't identified her as of late Wednesday afternoon. A local swimming instructor with a prosthetic leg happened to be in the right place at the right time Tuesday, when a 68-year-old driver who couldn't swim accidentally sent his car into the Newark Bay in Bayonne. The British Swim School instructor and lifeguard -- 29-year-old Anthony Capuano -- went in after him. And the entire rescue was caught on tape. A Bayonne man was arrested Wednesday after police saw video of him beating his pet Husky with his fists, police said. On Tuesday, witnesses saw Jose Ortiz, 23, pinning "Brinks" to the ground and punching him in the head and dragging the dog off with the dog's legs off the ground, police said. $1M Set Aside For Jersey Coast After Shipping Company Fined For Pollution
An Italian shipping company will pay a $4 million fine for dumping oily waste and other pollutants into the ocean and lying about it to the Coast Guard during a 2015 inspection in Bayonne, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said in a statement Wednesday. The company, d'Amico Shipping Italia S.p.A., pleaded guilty to violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships. In addition to the fine, the company will be subjected to oversight by a court-appointed monitor for four years.
