): One Dead, Highways Closed, Dozens Injured In North Jersey Crashes
UPDATE: One victim was confirmed dead and westbound Route 3 in East Rutherford was temporarily closed Wednesday morning following what was the most serious in a series of crashes on icy North Jersey roads. Here's a listing of incidents. Mark Kolta, 31, of North Bergen had been involved in an earlier chain-reaction crash on the Hackensack River bridge on westbound Route 3 shortly after 6:30 a.m., East Rutherford Deputy Police Chief Phillip Taormina said. No sooner had a repeat offender been released from the Bergen County Jail after crashing a car stolen out of Teaneck than he was back behind bars again. This time, Moonachie police said they caught him trying to steal a car from the Costco parking lot off Routes 17 and 46. Closter police nabbed a Pennsylvania man after he crashed a car stolen out of Teaneck and then bailed out, authorities said. Township police reported the 2001 Honda Civic stolen from outside the Family Dollar store on Teaneck Road around 3 p.m. Tuesday, Deputy Police Chief John A. Faggello said. The owner had left keys and a cellphone inside it, Faggello said. Closter Bicyclist, 63, Seriously Injured, Police Say
A 63-year-old bicyclist was flown to a local hospital by a medical chopper after he was struck Sunday afternoon in Closter, authorities said. The victim was found lying face down, bleeding and unconscious – but breathing – after he was struck by a Toyota Camry shortly after 1:30 p.m. at the corner of Knickerbocker Road and Harington Avenue, Sgt. Daniel Hargrave said.
