Evacuations Ordered After Struck Canister Releases 'Vapor Cloud' Near Hawthorne Ballfield
A "vapor cloud" released when a work crew accidentally punctured a buried canister containing a volatile chemical near a Hawthorne ballfield on Thursday. More than three dozen people were evacuated from nearby homes and businesses while the state DEP recovered the canister, which contained Methyltrichlorosilane, in an auxiliary parking lot, police Detective Sgt. Matthew Hoogmoed said. The chemical, which is "highly flammable and reacts violently with water," Hoogmoed said. Gas Leak At Ramsey Dental Office Forces Evacuations, Jams Traffic
A gas leak at a Ramsey dentist's office forced the evacuations of adjacent businesses and residences while temporarily halting area traffic during the Wednesday evening rush. PSE&G controlled the leak at the intersection of East Main Street and Island Avenue but had to do repairs that will keep the eastbound lane of Main Street closed awhile, Police Chief Brian Gurney said. : Electrical Explosion Draws Large Response To Hasbrouck Heights Hilton
Firefighters quickly doused an electrical fire that followed a small explosion Friday morning at the Hilton Hotel in Hasbrouck Heights. No injuries were at the evacuated hotel just off northbound Route 17. The explosion occurred in a basement electrical panel at the rear loading area just after 7 a.m., instantly drawing firefighters from Hackensack, Hasbrouck Heights, Little Ferry, Moonachie South Hackensack and Wood-Ridge, responders said. Underground Fire Forces Evacuation Of Newark Airport Terminal Wing
UPDATE: A fire in in a PSE&G manhole below a section of Newark Airport forced the evacuation late Friday morning of the C-1 wing at Terminal C, authorities said. "The fire has been extinguished, though there are still smoky conditions," the Port Authority's Joseph Pentangelo said just before 12:30 p.m. " There are no injuries. Fire crews are on scene.
