It was around 2:20 a.m. last week when Patrolman Mark Tagliareni clocked the vehicle on radar on Wyckoff Avenue, Chief Benjamin Fox said.
The driver refused to stop, however, and a pursuit continued to Crescent Avenue, where the speeder pulled into a driveway. Both he and his passenger then got out and ran inside the home, Fox said.
Police already knew the passenger, 20-year-old Daniel A. Chaupiz, who was arrested in Fair Lawn after two ShopRite security guards caught him sushi and potato chips and pounding an energy drink he took off the shelves without paying for any of it.
Fox said Chaupiz refused to identify the driver for police or unlock the front door to allow them to arrest him.
While this was going on out front, Wyckoff Sgt. Michael Ragucci and Officer William Plisich showed up around back, along with police from Allendale and Midland Park.
They spotted the driver inside and “entered the house through an unlocked rear door,” Fox said.
The officers had to forcibly restrain 22-year-old Alfred J. Weick of Franklin Lakes, the chief said.
“After being placed in a police car he attempted to kick out the windows, and ultimately had his feet restrained,” Fox said.
Weick, who has an April 2010 drug arrest on his record, was charged with resisting arrest, eluding a police officer, DWI, speeding and reckless driving.
He posted $25,000 bail and was released pending a June 20 Municipal Court date.
Chaupiz, who is still facing the robbery charges out of Fair Lawn, was released without bail, charged with obstruction of justice. He, too, has a drug arrest on his record.
