According to Police Chief Patrick Rotella, 39-year-old Telly Farrow convinced the victim to buy various vehicles that he said he’d re-sell at his used car dealership in Hackettstown. They could then split the profits, the victim said Farrow told him.
In exchange, Farrow offered to pay for the man’s new car and cover all insurance payments, the chief said.
The victim completed the necessary applications, parts of which Farrow forged in order to secure instant credit, Rotella said.
The man ended up buying five vehicles — two in Upper Saddle River — that purportedly went to Farrow for resale at a dealership he called Admiration Motors, he added.
The catch, Rotella said, was that the dealership didn’t exist.
Farrow “personally utilized the vehicles, none of the promised payments were made and the vehicles disappeared,” he said.
The victim, stuck with car and insurance payments totaling $12,500 a month, ended up filing for bankruptcy, the chief said.
Upper Saddle River police issued a warrant for Farrow’s arrest in September. He was arrested last Thursday in Rockland County, waived extradition and was brought to New Jersey over the weekend.
He remained held on $50,000 bail, charged with theft by deception and forgery.
