Upper Saddle River man who set himself on fire dies

UPDATE: A 55-year-old Upper Saddle River man who police said deliberately set himself on fire on Christmas Eve died Tuesday at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, authorities told Daily Voice.

AirMed One from Hackensack University Medical Center flew the man there in critical condition after he doused himself in accelerant and ignited it in his backyard Thursday afternoon.

Police responded after he called 911.

Officers who responded to the northeastern part of town just after 3 p.m. found “his condition deteroriorating” before their eyes, Detective Lt. Edward Kane told Daily Voice at the time.

He had severe burns on his head, face, chest, and arms, Kane said.

The Upper Saddle River Volunteer Ambulance Corps, the Upper Saddle River Volunteer Fire Department, Valley Hospital paramedics also responded.
