A black Mercedes GL450 SUV and white BMW sedan were both weaving in and out of traffic on the southbound highway Wednesday afternoon when the female sedan driver suddenly cut off the SUV, Allendale Police Chief George Scherb said.
The male SUV driver pulled off onto Pearl Court, where the speeding vehicle hit a curb on a curve, went airborne, hit a boulder on a traffic island and landed upright at the intersection of Boroline Road and Pearl Court, the chief said.
Emergency responders tended to the teen, who Scherb said was sitting in the back seat without a restraint. She was taken to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood with injuries that he said weren’t life-threatening.
The SUV driver and a 19-year-old male front seat passenger weren’t injured – nor was a Siberian Husky who was with the girl in the back seat, Scherb said.
The SUV driver, identified as 20-year-old Jiacheng Yao, was charged with assault by auto, reckless driving, racing on a highway, driving with no license and a suspended registration and improper restraint of an animal in a vehicle, among other offenses.
The BMW driver, 19-year-old Yuan Yao, was charged with careless driving, racing on a highway and being a unlicensed driver.
Ramsey and Saddle River detectives joined their Allendale counterparts at the scene.
Allendale firefighters tended to a fuel spill.
