Truck drops dozens of granite slabs on Route 17 in Mahwah

YOU SAW IT HERE FIRST: A truck carrying 42 slabs of granite lost the entire load on northbound Route 17 in Mahwah just before the Route 287 merge late this afternoon, nearly locking down the evening commute and backing up traffic all the way to Saddle River.

New Jersey Department of Transportation crews were still clearing debris more than 2½ hours after the load spilled around 4 p.m.

State Police were also on the scene investigating and directing traffic.

Route 17 north was in gridlock, with surrounding roadways choked, as well.
