‘The Social Network’ trailer debuts: Will you ‘friend’ it?

WHAT WE THINK: As teasers go, the full theatrical trailer for “The Social Network,” Columbia Pictures’ Facebook movie, is definitely catchy. Great move setting it to a choral version of Radiohead’s “Creep.”

But will people want to see Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s unswerving thirst for monetizing his dorm-room idea, his defiance of Harvard, which leveled copyright infringement charges against him, and the loss of onetime pal Eduardo Saverin?

After all, as the tagline reads: “You don’t get 500 million friends without making a few enemies.”

Until today, we had weeks of teasers with just sound. Now we see Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg and the new “Spider Man,” Andrew Garfield, as Saverin.

A pleasant surprise is the appearance of Justin Timberlake as Napster founder Sean Parker, who became FB’s president. Honestly, ever since the hilarious SNL holiday spoof, “D**k in a Box,” I’ve wondered what the guy could do in a feature-length role.

How the screen adaptation of Ben Mezrich’s Facebook tell-all “The Accidental Billionaires” will do is an ever bigger question.

Columbia Pictures certainly has the firepower, with “Fight Club” director David Fincher at the helm and a screenplay written by “West Wing” creator Aaron Sorkin. Tough to imagine Kevin Spacey putting up the initial $50 mil without getting a product virtually guaranteed to make his investment seem like peanuts.

It’s also as hard to imagine that it was only six years ago that the social networking phenomenon — which recently has been blamed for addicting women to itself — got its start in Cambridge, Mass. The trailer only furthers that concept.

(Zuckerberg, who had no involvement with the film, recently said: “I just wished that nobody made a movie of me while I was still alive.”)

Like social networking itself, the trailer is bite-sized. How many of the more than 500 million Facebook users will fork over today’s ridiculous movie fees and sit still long enough for the entire enchilada? Have a look for yourself: The full Social Network trailer

The film is scheduled to open the New York Film Festival in late September, and make its national debut Oct. 1.

I can’t wait till it’s on Hulu.
