At a time when new burglars seemingly appear all the time, it sometimes pays to check up on an ex-con when trouble hits, which is how Teaneck Police Chief Robert A. Wilson said his officers made a pair of initial arrests in the case.
Responding to an alarm, Wilson’s officers found two Hanover Street rear doors broken and the homes burglarized Wednesday night around 6. Jewelry was taken in one of the break-ins, the chief said.
“Detectives immediately established surveillance on the residence of Kali Carter[,] who was a suspect in several recent burglaries in town,” Wilson said. “A short time later, Carter was observed driving up to his residence with a second individual[,] who would later be identified as Hakeem Chance.”
Records show Carter, 37, served nine years in state prison for armed robbery and weapons possession before being released in February 2004. As a felon, he is prohibited from having a firearm.
Chance, 21, has a record of drug-related charges.
After waiting for them to come out, officers later followed the pair to an apartment complex on William Street in Englewood, where they tossed what turned out to be some of the stolen items into a trash bin, the chief said.
Police moved in and immediately arrested them, he said.
Wilson said he alerted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Burglary Task Force, which includes officers from several local police departments.
The squad obtained a search warrant for Carter’s home and vehicle, which Wilson said led to the seizures.
Chance is being held on $10,000 bail, charged with burglary and theft, at the Bergen County Jail.
Carter is in an entirely different situation, held on $750,000 cash bail and looking at a potentially long prison stretch if he is convicted.
Charges against him include various weapons counts – in addition to a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm – as well as burglary, theft and possession of hollow-nosed bullets and burglar’s tools.
An initial Municipal Court hearing is scheduled for Monday in Teaneck.
